Well it was not what we might call a summer to remember, but the mixture of mild temperatures and rainfall has provided a bounteous harvest of fruit and berries! Freezers across Sherborne must be stuffed with blackberries, still being picked well into October. The Golden Delicious tree in the wood had apples falling faster than they could be eaten by the inhabitants or passersby and the crab apples must number in the thousands both on the trees and on the ground.
The “silage” heaps, where the grass was cut from the meadow area, in amongst the trees have shrunk amazingly. Picture shows how big they were when first piled up, check them out to see what has happened to them. We hope they provide a refuge for small beasties during the coming months.
